Cross Street approaching John Dalton St and Princess St.
traffic signals do not detect cycle approach . A novice cyclist would cycle between the rail and the kerb - it is not certain whether there is a detection loop here, to pick any cycle approach.:

On approach Southbound the traffic signals on Cross St do not detect cycles. 1 cycle approached the junction near the kerb to avoid crossing the tram rail unnecessarily ; I waited through 3 phases of light changes while this signal remained on red.

Vehicle detection is by a MVD (or Moving Vehicle Detector) – this is a small unit on top of the traffic signal pole – and not a physical loop in the carriageway

· MVDs have a detection zone and this is angled to detect all cycles and trams on the approach to the signals

a fault os raised with signal maintenance company to check detection

If any signals are not detecting cycles in Greater Manchester then please email gmutc@tfgm.com and it will pass to the signal company directly.
